Water Supply:

TOWN OF MAPLE CREEK

The Town of Maple Creek would like to advise all residents that the water being supplied through the Town infrastructure is safe for drinking and all uses. The supply has NEVER been compromised by the flood and has been subject to regular testing that we normally do each day. Samples are sent in to the Health Region, Provincial Laboratory for testing and have not been subject to any negative results.

RURAL MUNICIPALITY OF MAPLE CREEK

The ads on the radio authorized by Sask Watershed Authority are referring to rural wells at private locations and information regarding having water tested is for these rural setting. Procedure are laid out in the pamphlets that were distributed and still available at the Town Hall.

Following heavy rain and flooding in the Maple Creek and Swift Current Regions, Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is offering to test, free of charge, private wells used as drinking water sources that may have been contaminated by surface water flows. Increased runoff can lead to surface water infiltration and contamination of wells through damaged well casings, improper seals or caps or other routes of exposure. Sample testing will focus on the immediate risk to human health posed by bacteriological threats and nitrates. Watershed Authority staff will test private wells and provide information on well management techniques to help reduce health risks. The Cypress Health Region is focusing its efforts on the regulated wells in the impacted area. Individuals or small communities eligible for the testing must be using the well water as a source of drinking water, suspect the water source has been impacted by heavy rain or flooding, and be located in or around the Swift Current and Maple Creek areas.

Information from Building Standards:

Building Standards staff has been in the Town of Maple Creek and the RM of Maple Creek inspecting houses and other buildings. The following broad recommendations apply to all flooded buildings.

Ventilation: Keep doors and windows open. Use fans and where possible introduce fresh outdoor air to basements, crawl spaces and cellars. Use dehumidifiers.

Remove Moisture- Remove all wet and damaged household items. Continue to remove standing water. Remove floor coverings. Remove wet drywall, paneling, and interior insulation to a dry level above the highest water line. Continued seepage of ground water needs to be controlled /removed.

Gas and Electrical Services- Electric, natural gas or oil burning appliances that were flooded must be inspected/cleaned or otherwise reconnected by qualified trades people. Electrical service panels that have been in water must be allowed to dry out.

Mould- All flooded and contaminated surfaces should be cleaned with a solution of water and ammonia. Continue to ventilate and dry. Suitable masks should be worn to avoid inhalation and mould spores.

General Observations- Soil conditions are such that buildings will continue to see the effects of moisture laden soil for some time. As the soil dries out continued movement will be noticed. Doors and windows binding will be the most noticeable. Cracking in concrete and concrete block foundation may be seen. If significant changes occur it is important to have your building inspected. Anyone wishing to have their house or other buildings inspected can contact the Town Office. Lists are being compiled for the next round of inspections expected to begin on July 5 or sooner.

Road Conditions:

Please obey all signs regarding road closures. They are closed for the safety of the public and to start the repair process.
